Mogadishu – 26 August 2026 – Somalia’s Supreme Court has annulled the results of the parliamentary and local council elections held in the Galmudug regional state, ordering fresh polls to be conducted in line with the constitution and national electoral laws.

In a ruling issued on 24 August 2026, the court said the 30 July 2026 elections were not properly administered and did not comply with constitutional principles or the National Election Law. It stated that irregularities in the electoral process undermined the transparency, freedom and integrity of the vote, making the results legally invalid.

The court ordered the National Independent Electoral Commission to conduct new elections for Galmudug’s House of Representatives and local councils, following the federal constitution and other relevant electoral regulations.

The Supreme Court also ruled that the current authorities in Galmudug should remain in office until new institutions are elected, to avoid a power vacuum that could affect public services and stability in the regional state.
